Trump busted using bogus numbers to boast about falling food prices
Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, President Donald Trump faced swift ridicule on social media after touting a 25% drop in Thanksgiving dinner prices on Truth Social, attributing it to Walmart and claiming it proves “AFFORDABILITY is a Republican Stronghold.”
The post, which stated, “Walmart just announced that Prices for a Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024,” was immediately community-noted on X for omitting that Walmart’s 2025 meal package contains fewer items and more generic products than the 2024 version, highlighting the claim’s misleading nature amid broader grocery inflation and the ongoing government shutdown.
How It Went Down
Trump’s post read: “Walmart just announced that Prices for a Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024. ‘AFFORDABILITY is a Republican Stronghold,’ Hopefully, Republicans will use this irrefutable fact.”
The announcement referenced Walmart’s October 30, press release on its annual Thanksgiving meal bundle, priced at $46 for 10 items in 2025 versus $61 for 12 items in 2024, per Walmart’s corporate site.
X’s community note, added within 30 minutes, clarified: “Walmart’s 2025 meal includes fewer items (10 vs. 12 in 2024) and substitutes generic brands for name brands, reducing cost without reflecting broader price drops.”

Users piled on, with one posting, “Context matters,” and another sharing side-by-side comparisons showing Great Value substitutes replacing brands like Ocean Spray and Stove Top, per X threads.

A third user noted, “Thanks to Trump, millions of Americans can’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner at any price,” referencing the shutdown’s delay of SNAP benefits for 42 million recipients.
Broader Grocery Price Reality
Despite Trump’s assertion, October Consumer Price Index (CPI) data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed average grocery prices up 3% year-over-year, with meats, poultry, eggs and fish, rising 5.2%, per BLS. This marks the third consecutive month of acceleration, driven by supply chain disruptions and tariff impacts on imports, per the October 2025 CPI summary.
