Lawrence O’Donnell drops bombshell – ‘Donald Trump is living in fear’
New York, NY – On Wednesday, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell delivered a blistering Last Word monologue celebrating Democratic victories in off-year elections, declaring President Donald Trump is “living in fear” of losing the House in 2026 and facing investigations into “personal profiteering” and abuse of office.
The sweepory, including Zohran Mamdani’s NYC mayoral win, Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger’s gubernatorial triumphs in New Jersey and Virginia, and California’s Proposition 50 passage, signal a backlash that could halt “Trump madness,” as the 37-day shutdown complicates bipartisan talks.
O’Donnell said, “The election returns last night indicated that a year from now, Democrats will win back control of the House… most of the Trump madness can be stopped in its tracks—and Donald Trump knows that.”
Democratic sweeps in NYC, NJ, VA, and CA reveal opposition to Trump’s policies, per AP News.
Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani defeated Andrew Cuomo, whom Trump endorsed November 3, on Truth Social. Mamdani’s victory speech taunted Trump: “Turn the volume up.”
Former Reps. Mikie Sherrill, Abigail Spanberger, and Lizzie Fletcher all notched significant Democratic victories in Tuesday’s elections, marking a strong night for the party across several battleground states.
In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won the governor’s race with 55% of the vote, defeating her Republican opponent in a contest that centered on affordability, women’s rights, and public safety. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger also captured the governorship with 53%, extending Democrats’ hold on the state and positioning herself as a rising national figure ahead of 2028.
Meanwhile, in Texas, Lizzie Fletcher retained her House seat with 54% of the vote, solidifying her position in a district that has increasingly leaned blue in recent election cycles.
In addition to the individual wins, 54% of voters across multiple states approved new redistricting measures that could create as many as five additional Democratic-leaning House seats. The new maps aim to address population shifts and gerrymandering concerns, but analysts say the changes could also bolster Democrats’ chances of reclaiming a narrow House majority in 2026.
Analysts say the combination of these wins and the redistricting approval highlights growing voter alignment with centrist Democratic policies in suburban regions once considered competitive Republican territory.
O’Donnell mocked Trump’s Truth Social claim that GOP losses occurred because “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT,” noting even the Wall Street Journal editorial board called Trump symbolically present and warned, “If Trump actually believes this, the GOP is heading for bigger problems in 2026.”
Shutdown Stalemate and Investigations Loom
The wins complicate shutdown talks, with Democrats demanding ACA subsidy extensions. O’Donnell predicted a Democratic House would probe Trump’s Cabinet for “personal profiteering” and office abuse, citing DOJ’s August indictments of Democrats as precedent.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court heard Learning Resources v. Trump, with Neal Katyal arguing, “Tariffs are taxes. They take dollars from Americans’ pockets,” per SCOTUS transcript. O’Donnell cheered: “‘Tariffs are taxes’ is the single shortest sentence that exposes the lie of the Trump tariffs… Donald Trump’s lawyer didn’t dare try to tell that lie to the Supreme Court today.”
