Democrats Flip Council in Stunning Win for City Trump Has Always Demonized

Aurora, CO – On Tuesday, progressive candidates secured all five open City Council seats in Aurora, Colorado, flipping the 11-member council from a 7-3 conservative majority to a 6-4 progressive one, per preliminary results from the Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder.

The landslide, hailed by Colorado Democrats as a rejection of MAGA fearmongering, came in the same city President Donald Trump repeatedly branded an “invaded and conquered” “war zone” overrun by Venezuelan migrants during his 2024 campaign, including at an October 11, rally at Gaylord Rockies Resort where he unveiled “Operation Aurora” to deport Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang members.

As of Tuesday, unofficial results show progressives Rob Andrews and Alli Jackson leading the two at-large seats with 26% and 25% of votes, respectively, defeating incumbent Danielle Jurinsky (19%), who spoke at Trump’s rally, and Amsalu Kassaw (18%), per the Colorado Secretary of State.

In wards, Gianina Horton, Amy Wiles, and incumbent Ruben Medina won with 52%, 51%, and 55%, respectively, flipping conservative strongholds, per Sentinel Colorado.

The sweep, with 68% voter turnout among registered Democrats, signals a shift. “For years, MAGA Republicans treated Aurora like a political prop and were more focused on stoking division,” Colorado Democrats posted on X.

Aurora, Colorado’s third-largest city with 400,000 residents, has seen tensions rise since an August 2024 viral video of armed Venezuelan men at an apartment complex, later identified as TdA affiliates, per Aurora Police.

Trump’s 2024 Focus on Aurora

Trump’s October 11, 2024, rally in Aurora, the only 2024 campaign stop in Colorado, featured posters of TdA members and promises of the death penalty for migrant killers. He claimed 80% of apartment residents fled TdA “takeovers,” despite city officials stating the area was safe and only 10 TdA-linked arrests occurred.

Mayor Mike Coffman, a conservative, attributed the losses to low GOP turnout: “Republicans weren’t fired up enough… What happens at the national level impacts the local.”

The progressive majority, taking office January, plans to focus on affordable housing and immigrant support, challenging Trump’s raids, per Aurora City Council transition memo.
