‘Waste of Space’: Internet Throws Trump Under the Bus Following ‘Most Psychotic’ Attack After Rob Reiner’s Death
President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm of condemnation across social media and beyond Monday morning with a bizarre and widely criticized Truth Social post about the tragic deaths of Hollywood icon Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
Rather than expressing condolences amid an ongoing homicide investigation, Trump attributed the couple’s demise to Reiner’s vocal criticism of him, coining it a fatal case of “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME” (TDS)—a term he has long used to dismiss opponents.
The post, which many described as “psychotic,” “ghoulish,” and “evil,” transformed a moment of national mourning into a self-centered attack, drawing rebukes from journalists, celebrities, political analysts, and even some of Trump’s own supporters.

Trump wrote: “A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.”
“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

Los Angeles police discovered the couple in their Brentwood home over the weekend, treating the deaths as a homicide. Details remain scarce, with investigators pursuing leads but no suspects named publicly.
Reiner, 78, was a legendary figure in entertainment: director of classics like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and A Few Good Men; co-creator and star of All in the Family as “Meathead”; and an outspoken liberal activist who frequently criticized Trump on social media and in interviews.

Immediate and Bipartisan Backlash
The reaction was swift and visceral. Journalist Aaron Rupar called it “one of the most psychotic things Trump has ever posted.” Vanity Fair editor Aidan McLaughlin wrote: “Christ. Trump says Rob Reiner and his wife were murdered ‘due to the anger he caused others’ through his ‘TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.’”
On Bluesky, users expressed horror: “Holy …, Trump is saying Rob Reiner had it coming,” wrote Brosemite Sam. Another interpreted: “If you read this properly, he’s saying that Reiner was killed bc he made a Trump supporter too angry, and this is a good thing.”
Critics highlighted the narcissism: NBC Universal executive Mike Sington noted, “The ghoulish, disgusting, unhinged, horrible Donald Trump makes the tragic murder of Rob Reiner about himself.” Author Russell Moore warned of generational shame: “How this vile, disgusting, and immoral behavior has become normalized… is something our descendants will study in school.”
Gizmodo writer Matt Novak was blunt: “Trump is just a fundamentally evil person.” Jewish News editor Daniel Sugarman admitted initial disbelief: “I had to check this was real… Sickening.”
Tributes to Reiner emphasized his lasting legacy: Political commentator John Stoeher wrote, “Reiner’s body isn’t cold yet but here’s the American president pissing on it… Americans will be quoting The Princess Bride long after they have forgotten Trump.”
Even MAGA Voices Dissent
Notably, some Trump supporters urged restraint. “@Laurengerbino” posted: “Terrible post and I am a big Trump supporter. Take it down!!” Others echoed: “This was heartless and uncalled for,” and “Please stop President Trump… this is not a good idea.”
The rare intra-base criticism showed the post’s boundary-pushing nature, even for a president known for provocative statements.
Reiner had been a persistent Trump critic, co-founding the Committee to Investigate Russia and frequently labeling Trump a threat to democracy. Trump’s response fits a pattern: using personal tragedies or deaths of adversaries for political point-scoring, from John McCain to Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
The timing—mere hours after news of the deaths broke—amplified perceptions of callousness. As one Bluesky user, Rachel Sexton, vented: “My God. F— this despicable waste of space… What an inhuman monster.”
White House officials have not commented on the post, which remained online as of Monday. Trump has not issued any formal condolences through official channels.

Reiner’s death has prompted widespread tributes celebrating his cultural impact—from Spinal Tap to Misery—and his advocacy for progressive causes. Co-stars and collaborators, including Billy Crystal and Sally Field, shared heartfelt remembrances emphasizing his warmth and talent.
In contrast, Trump’s post has dominated discourse, reigniting debates about presidential decorum, mental fitness, and the normalization of extreme rhetoric. For many, it crystallized a presidency defined by division—even in moments that traditionally unite Americans in grief.
