On Tuesday, Texas District Court Judge Christine Del Prado handed down the sentence to 21-year-old Samantha Elizabeth Baker, following her guilty plea for causing serious bodily injury to a child. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the sentencing in a press release.

The incident occurred in June 2023, when emergency responders were called to investigate the sudden death of Baker’s infant. Initially, Baker told authorities she had discovered her child unresponsive. However, during the investigation, she admitted to striking the baby out of frustration while he was crying.

An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner revealed the infant died from a fractured skull resulting from blunt force trauma.

“This sentence reflects our community’s deep commitment to protecting its most vulnerable and ensuring justice is served for those who harm children,” said Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales in a statement.

According to an arrest affidavit, Baker told police she struck the child on the head approximately three times with an open hand after becoming overwhelmed by his crying. She then wrapped the baby in a blanket and laid him faceup in his bassinet. She later awoke to find him unresponsive.
