Republicans Crushed Across the Country — and Trump Is Losing It
Washington, D.C. – On Tuesday, President Donald Trump unleashed a barrage of Truth Social posts following Democratic victories in key elections, including Zohran Mamdani’s landslide mayoral win in New York City, blaming the ongoing government shutdown for the GOP’s defeats and demanding Republicans “terminate the filibuster” to pass voter reform and legislation.
Trump’s outburst, which avoided personal accountability despite his influence on the stalemate, included boasts about his 60 Minutes interview ratings and calls for the “nuclear option” in the Senate, escalating pressure on Republicans amid a 40-day shutdown that has shuttered federal services and fueled economic anxiety.
Trump’s Post-Election Blame Game
Trump’s posts, fired off after polls closed, claimed, “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.”
He shifted blame from his role in the shutdown, which began September 30, over disagreements on ACA subsidies and spending, to Democrats, despite his veto threats against extension proposals, per CNN.
The shutdown has furloughed 800,000 federal workers and delayed $2 billion in SNAP benefits, per the Office of Management and Budget, contributing to GOP losses in Georgia and Virginia, where Democrats flipped two House seats.
Trump pivoted to self-congratulation, posting, “JUST OUT: The 60 Minutes interview of Donald J. Trump, on CBS, Sunday night, was the highest rated 60 Minutes IN YEARS!” The interview, aired October 26, was edited to exclude Trump’s 15-minute rant on Epstein files, but still drew 15.2 million viewers, topping recent episodes, per Nielsen ratings.
Calls for Filibuster Abolition and Voter Reform
Trump directed Republicans to “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER! GET BACK TO PASSING LEGISLATION AND VOTER REFORM!” and “INITIATE THE ‘NUCLEAR OPTION’” to enact voter ID, ban mail-in ballots, prevent Supreme Court “packing,” and block “two state addition,” per Truth Social.
The filibuster, a Senate tradition requiring 60 votes for most legislation, has been a GOP shield in the minority but a hurdle in the majority, per Senate historian records. Trump’s demand, echoing his 2021 push, risks internal revolt, with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) opposing abolition in August 2025 statements.
MAGA Meltdown and GOP Fallout
MAGA supporters echoed Trump’s frustration on X, with @LauraLoomer posting, “Shutdown is Democrat sabotage—end the filibuster NOW!” while @Kevin_McCarthy suggested compromise, per his X thread.
The losses, including Mamdani’s 58% win over Andrew Cuomo in NYC, signal Democratic momentum, with a 2025 Cook Political Report showing 15 GOP seats vulnerable in 2026, up from 10 in 2024.
