Karoline Leavitt Caught Pushing Trump’s Fantasies: ‘Lying by a Government Official Should Be a Criminal Offense’
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt drew sharp rebukes on social media and from economists after insisting on Fox News that the U.S. labor market under President Donald Trump is experiencing “remarkable” job gains, despite fresh data showing rising unemployment and negative job growth in recent months.
Critics accused her of outright falsehoods and gaslighting the public, with some calling for legal accountability for what they describe as deceptive statements from a government official.
During a Friday appearance on Fox News, Leavitt responded to the latest disappointing November employment report by claiming the Trump administration is successfully “putting Americans back to work.” She asserted that “job gains historically throughout this past year” have been “most remarkable,” particularly for American citizens.
Yet the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data tells a different story. The November report showed the unemployment rate climbing to 4.6%—the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021—and only 64,000 jobs added, following a revised loss of 105,000 jobs in October.
The economy has added fewer jobs in the past year than under the previous administration, with private-sector growth slowing and federal layoffs contributing to the strain.
Leavitt’s claim that “President Trump is putting American citizens back into the labor force” directly contradicts the BLS figures, which show declining labor force participation in key sectors and rising unemployment among native-born workers.
She also repeated the administration’s familiar talking point that “100 percent of the jobs gained under the previous administration were for foreign-born workers,” a claim repeatedly debunked by economists who note that job growth under Biden was historically strong and broadly distributed.

Leavitt Faces Accusations of Lying and Calls for Accountability
The interview triggered immediate outrage online, with critics accusing Leavitt of deliberate deception. Social media users shared screenshots of her smiling delivery while making the claims, juxtaposed with BLS charts showing the opposite trend.
“If you look at this you can see where the lies are injected,” one Threads user wrote, zooming in on a close-up of Leavitt’s face and alleging visible signs of cosmetic procedures.
Others were more direct: “If it’s moving its lips it’s lying,” another wrote. A third called her “KaroLYIN” and suggested “lying by a government official should be a criminal offense.”
The phrase “evil ages like milk” resurfaced from earlier online mockery of Leavitt’s appearance, with users tying it to her statements: “Wow, the provable lies in this statement are once again astounding.”
One particularly pointed critique came from a user who highlighted the disconnect between Leavitt’s rosy portrayal and everyday reality: “Everyone out in the country looking for jobs will tell you looking for work is BRUTAL right now. This revisionist history BULLSH-T is just infuriating.”

Comparing Economic Reality Against The Administration Claims
The latest BLS data confirms a cooling labor market since Trump took office. Job growth has slowed significantly compared to the robust expansion under Biden, which added jobs for 48 consecutive months—the second-longest streak on record. Federal layoffs, part of Trump’s push to reduce government size, have added to the pressure on the labor market.
Economists have warned that continued weakening could signal a broader slowdown, especially with inflation still elevated and consumer confidence slipping. The administration has countered by focusing on “quality” jobs and blaming external factors, but Leavitt’s comments went further by asserting gains that the data simply do not support.
Leavitt’s pattern of bold claims often at odds with independent data—has drawn consistent criticism. Fact-checkers have repeatedly flagged her statements on tariffs, drug prices, and economic indicators, yet she maintains a combative style in briefings, frequently accusing reporters of bias.

The labor market remains a top voter concern, with recent polls showing Americans prioritizing economic issues over foreign policy or culture wars. If unemployment continues to rise, the administration’s narrative of a “Golden Age” risks losing credibility—making Leavitt’s role as chief spokesperson increasingly challenging.
Her Fox News appearance, meant to project confidence, instead became a flashpoint for accusations of deception. Whether the backlash will dent her standing within the White House or further erode public trust in administration messaging remains to be seen.
