Grandmother who shot 6-month-old granddaughter in the eye told cops she’s ‘not sorry’
Mia Desiree Harris, a 43-year-old Ohio grandmother, has pleaded guilty to felonious assault after admitting to shooting her 6-month-old granddaughter in the eye.
The shocking incident occurred on December 9, 2023, at a residence in Liberty Township, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati. Despite the severity of the attack, the baby miraculously survived, and her condition has since improved.
Deputies from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at 1:50 a.m. on the day of the shooting. The baby’s mother, in a panic, told the dispatcher, “My baby’s been shot,” pleading for her child’s life.
When first responders arrived, they found the infant with a gunshot wound to the head, specifically the eye, and rushed her to the hospital in critical condition.
The baby was not Harris’ only target that night. According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Harris fired at multiple family members before deliberately shooting the child.
Court documents revealed that Harris also assaulted another family member by punching them in the face. She further attempted to break down a locked bedroom door, firing her handgun through the door multiple times.
Harris fled the scene but was apprehended shortly afterward. When questioned about her actions, she showed no remorse. “That was not my grandbaby. Sorry, not sorry,” she reportedly told deputies.
Harris also claimed that her family was trying to take all her money and leave her behind, leading her to retaliate in this horrific manner. “They crucified her, so she crucified them,” she told investigators.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones expressed outrage over the crime, calling it one of the worst and most vile acts he had ever encountered. “It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose,” he said. “This is as bad as it gets.”
The sheriff extended his sympathies to the baby, the family, and everyone involved, including the medical and emergency personnel who responded to the case.
