Trump’s overall approval rating is down, even on ‘immigration—by far his best issue’
Recent polling data presents another setback for President Donald Trump, with his approval ratings showing renewed decline after a short-lived recovery earlier this month.
While Trump enjoyed a brief period of improved ratings following weeks of negative numbers, that gain has now eroded according to several new surveys conducted over the past two weeks.
A fresh analysis by veteran pollster Nate Silver, published on his Silver Bulletin website, indicates that Trump’s net approval rating has fallen once again into negative territory, currently standing at -6.1.
This figure reflects the difference between the percentage of Americans who approve of the president’s performance and those who disapprove, based on an aggregation of various national polls.
Despite these findings, the White House has dismissed the significance of the polls. In a statement, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson insisted that public sentiment remains solidly behind the president.
“A clear majority of voters approve of the job President Trump is doing,” Jackson said. “He’s keeping his promises to secure the border, deport illegal aliens, bring jobs back to America, put American workers first, and much, much more. It’s no shock that over 54% of Americans approve of the President’s performance. And despite the fake news and left-wing attacks, President Trump will never stop delivering for the American people.”
Trends in the Numbers
Silver’s analysis, co-authored with Eli McKown-Dawson, notes that Trump’s approval rating had been rebounding since hitting a low point of -9.7 on April 29. By June 10, the president’s net approval had climbed to -3.6.
However, much of that progress has been lost over the past two weeks, with net approval dropping back to -6.1. The percentage of Americans who strongly approve of Trump’s job performance has also fallen by roughly three points since June 10.
Other polls corroborate this decline. According to The Economist, Trump’s approval rating is now underwater in 15 states that he won during the last presidential election.
Meanwhile, RealClearPolitics reports a backslide in overall approval, and even a survey conducted by a Republican-aligned pollster shows waning support for the president.
What Experts Are Saying
Silver and McKown-Dawson highlight that Trump’s approval on immigration—widely regarded as one of his strongest issues—has also taken a hit.
“On immigration—by far his best issue—Trump’s net approval rating is down to -3.8,” they wrote. “That’s the lowest it’s been since the start of his second term. Trump’s net immigration approval was +4.0 just two weeks ago.” His approval rating on managing inflation and the cost of living has dropped by nearly six points during the same period.

Why It’s Important
The backdrop to Trump’s slipping approval numbers is a nation struggling with significant economic and social challenges.
Soaring inflation continues to strain household budgets, driving up the cost of living and pushing home ownership out of reach for many Americans. At the same time, widespread layoffs, particularly in the retail sector, have fueled economic anxiety.
Trump’s critics have pointed to his trade policies—including steep tariffs—as a contributor to rising consumer prices. His controversial immigration crackdowns, as well as provisions in his much-touted “big, beautiful bill,” have sparked deep divisions and protests nationwide.
Adding to domestic concerns, Trump’s decision over the weekend to authorize a U.S. military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities has further complicated his standing with voters.
The move has drawn a sharp rebuke from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who vowed that the U.S. “must receive a response for their aggression.”
The strike has reignited debates about Trump’s foreign policy, particularly in light of his repeated campaign pledges that the United States would avoid entanglement in new overseas conflicts.
