Trump ‘incapable of even a train of thought’ during Newsom phone call – ‘He doesn’t even know what day it is’: Report
California Governor Gavin Newsom has significantly intensified his ongoing political confrontation with President Donald Trump, raising pointed concerns about Trump’s mental acuity in the lead-up to his 79th birthday.
In recent comments, Newsom implied that the former president’s cognitive capabilities have notably declined, particularly during recent discussions about federal military involvement in Los Angeles.
Newsom expressed frustration over what he described as unproductive and disjointed conversations with Trump regarding growing unrest and the potential deployment of federal troops in the city, according to a report by Axios political correspondent Alex Thompson.
The governor suggested that Trump, once capable of substantive dialogue, is no longer mentally sharp.
“He’s not the same person that I dealt with just four years ago,” Newsom said during an interview with Fox LA. “He’s incapable of even a train of thought.” He continued more bluntly: “He’s lost it.”
Thompson, who co-authored the book Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again with CNN’s Jake Tapper, noted in the Axios report that Newsom’s latest remarks are part of a broader series of criticisms he has recently leveled against Trump. These attacks have included characterizing the president as a grave threat to American democracy and accusing him of steering the country toward authoritarianism.
Newsom has also taken to social media to amplify his concerns. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Trump doesn’t even know what day it is,” a comment aimed at questioning the president’s awareness and mental sharpness.
The Axios report further acknowledged that Trump has long been known for his distinctive and often erratic speaking style, which he himself has described as “the weave” — a rhetorical approach that frequently involves digressions and abrupt topic shifts. While Trump’s supporters see this style as a sign of his unfiltered authenticity, critics, like Newsom, interpret it as evidence of deeper cognitive issues.

Newsom’s escalating attacks come amid a broader national conversation about the fitness of aging political leaders. However, Newsom’s latest statements mark one of the most direct and personal critiques of Trump’s cognitive state by a high-profile Democratic leader in recent months.
Others Who Raised Alarms Over Trump’s Mental Fitness
Several prominent Democrats have recently escalated their concerns about President Trump’s mental acuity, citing a string of erratic public appearances and troubling private interactions.
Kamala Harris echoed her concerns following Trump’s unusual behavior during a televised town hall, where the president reportedly paused mid-event to play music for nearly 40 minutes. Harris has since urged Trump to release his medical records, drawing a sharp contrast with her own public health disclosures.
Meanwhile, Representative Jasmine Crockett (D‑TX) criticized Trump’s rambling West Point commencement address, which veered off into commentary on topics ranging from Al Capone to drag shows. “That was absolutely deplorable,” Crockett said, calling on Republicans to question whether the president is mentally fit to lead.
Some lawmakers have previously advocated for formal mechanisms to assess presidential capacity, including legislative proposals invoking the 25th Amendment. While Trump’s allies insist he remains sharp and capable, critics argue that his recent behavior shows the urgent need for transparency and accountability at the highest level of government.
