Teen girl caught on camera, casually using phone moments after shooting mom dead
In the murder trial of 15-year-old Carly Gregg, a disturbing video from the family’s kitchen was played in court on Tuesday, depicting events just moments before Gregg fatally shot her mother, Ashley Smylie, a 40-year-old math teacher from Rankin County, Mississippi.
The incident occurred on March 19, 2023, when Gregg was 14 years old.
The footage showed Gregg in the Brandon home wearing a Nirvana T-shirt. At one point, she appeared to be hiding an object behind her back as she walked towards her bedroom.
Moments later, three gunshots could be heard, followed by the chilling sounds of Smylie screaming. Immediately after the shooting, Gregg returned to the kitchen and began using a phone while her two dogs hovered around her.
Prosecutors allege that Gregg used her mother’s phone to send a text message to her stepfather, Heath Smylie, asking, “When will you be home honey?” They further claim that when Heath arrived, she shot him in the shoulder. He managed to wrestle the gun away from her, surviving the attack.
Additionally, prosecutors argue that Gregg texted a friend, identified as B.W., asking them to come over to the house, claiming there was an “emergency.” When the friend arrived, Gregg showed them her mother’s body and ominously stated that her stepfather would be next.
The video evidence showed Gregg acting nonchalantly after the murder, attending to her dogs and using the phone, even as the sounds of her mother dying echoed through the home. After shooting Heath, she fled the scene, as captured by garage footage nearly 50 minutes later.
Heath took the stand during the trial, recounting the horrifying moment he found his wife dead.
He testified about the struggle with Gregg after she attempted to shoot him, stating, “The gun flashed in my face… It went off two more times, but my hand was on the gun after the first shot, and I twisted it from Carly.” He recalled seeing his wife’s body, covered with a towel, and described the moment he realized she had been fatally shot.
Heath expressed disbelief at Gregg’s actions, describing her as a “sweet little girl” prior to the incident but noted she looked as if “she had seen a demon or something” that day.
He also revealed, through bodycam footage played in court, that he told law enforcement officers his stepdaughter had killed her mother and tried to shoot him before fleeing the scene.
