Mom poisons 2-year-old daughter with meds, sits and watches as she overdoses and dies
21-year-old Macie Marie Silvey, from California, has been sentenced to 33 years to life in prison for the murder of her 2-year-old daughter, whom she poisoned with prescription medication and left to suffer in a car as she dies, according to Shasta County prosecutors.
Silvey, was charged with first-degree murder and kidnapping. She pleaded guilty to both charges in May. While prosecutors declined to name the victim due to her being a juvenile, other reports have identified her as “Riley,” with an obituary referring to her as Rylee Marie Silvey.
The tragic events unfolded on January 5, 2023, when law enforcement and emergency medical personnel responded to a report of an unresponsive toddler in a vehicle near Deschutes Road and State Highway 44 in Shasta County.
The child was transported to a hospital but died later that evening. A pathologist found that Rylee had between seven and 15 different prescription drugs in her system.
After months of investigation, authorities determined that Silvey had intentionally given her daughter multiple prescription medications. On the day of Rylee’s death, despite noticing signs of overdose, Silvey drove her to a remote area of Shasta County and delayed seeking medical help for several hours, resulting in the child’s death.
Initially, Silvey claimed that her daughter had accidentally opened medication bottles at home. However, when asked to take a lie detector test, Silvey attempted to stage a suicide, leaving behind a note and fleeing without her phone.
Silvey obtained a new phone number and a fake ID before being tracked down by investigators. Silvey gave conflicting accounts of the events leading to her daughter’s death, including one version where she admitted to leaving open medication bottles stolen from her mother.
Silvey’s motive for the crime was not revealed in court. During the sentencing, Rylee’s grandfathers delivered emotional statements.
John Harrison, the paternal grandfather, expressed his grief saying, “When I found out that she died, I really can’t express the anguish I felt. Macie, what you did was monstrous. I will never understand why you did it. She never got to grow up. Macie, you have a lot to atone for.”

The maternal grandfather, Todd Silvey, lamented the double loss of both his daughter and granddaughter, stating, “It pains me. There’s no win when she goes to prison. We’ll have nothing. It’s a lose-lose situation.” He further noted, “The person that murdered our granddaughter is not the same person who grew up with us.”
