Mom burns teen daughter’s rapist alive after he taunts her about the attack while out of prison

A mother from Alicante, Spain, was pained as she got a jail term for setting her daughter’s rapist on fire and burning him to death after he taunted her upon his release from prison.

Maria del Carmen Garcia could not endure the sight of Antonio Cosme, who had brutally raped her daughter Veronica at knifepoint when she was just 13 years old in 1998. Cosme, their neighbor, was initially sentenced to nine years in prison.

In June 2005, during a day release, Cosme brazenly confronted Maria at a bus stop near her home and insolently asked, “how her daughter was.” This encounter happened not far from a bar that Maria’s family often visited, where Cosme later went.

Overwhelmed by anger and fear, Maria bought petrol from a nearby station. She entered the bar, drenched Cosme with the fuel, and set him on fire. Cosme suffered burns on 90% of his body and succumbed to his injuries days later in a hospital.

Maria was found disoriented around the port that evening and confessed to the act. She claimed that her intention was to frighten or severely hurt Cosme, not to kill him. Initially sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison for murder, Maria’s sentence was reduced to five-and-a-half years on appeal.

Her sentencing led to a national outcry in support of Maria. Petitions gathered thousands of signatures, and her severe depression and anxiety were well-documented in medical records. Many people called for her inclusion in Spain’s Easter pardon tradition.

In 2011, after serving one year and ten days, the courts placed her sentence on hold pending a pardon application, citing “special circumstances,” such as her clean criminal record and an insanity plea at the time of the crime.

However, her freedom was short-lived. In 2013, the regional high court in Alicante rejected her attorney’s request to delay her imprisonment after the government denied her partial pardon petition.

By 2017, Maria earned the privilege of daytime leave, leading to her full release the following year.
