Rhonda Paulynice, 41, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, failure to report a death, and tampering with physical evidence, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro. The victim, Ra’myl Pierre, was found deceased on May 30, though investigators believe he died on May 18.

During a news conference on Friday, Sheriff Del Toro described the case as particularly harrowing for the officers involved.

Authorities were alerted after a school resource officer at Samuel Gaines Academy received a tip on May 30 regarding Pierre’s prolonged absence from school, having last attended on May 14. A deputy responded to the child’s residence on the 2500 block of Bedford Drive in Fort Pierce later that morning. Upon arrival, Paulynice met the deputy in the driveway and led him inside, where Pierre was found dead in his bed.

While the exact cause of death has not yet been determined, an autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

According to investigators, Paulynice last interacted with her son on May 18—the day she is believed to have killed him. During interviews with detectives, she reportedly stated that she believed she was receiving divine instructions to “exorcise demons” from the child. When Pierre stopped moving, she believed the demons had been expelled and was waiting for him to return to life.

“She exhibited a range of behaviors during the investigation, including moments of laughter and sudden emotional shifts,” said Sheriff Del Toro. “It was clear she was experiencing extreme mental and emotional fluctuations.”

Law enforcement had previously visited the residence as recently as May 17, the day before Pierre’s suspected death, in response to a medical issue concerning Paulynice. However, no prior incidents involving the child had been reported.

Del Toro also noted a history of domestic issues at the residence dating back to January, involving Paulynice and a relative, though none were linked to the child.

Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow over the tragedy. “I’m devastated. I’m sick to my stomach,” said Theresa Sienkiewicz, a local resident.

Sheriff Del Toro offered heartfelt condolences, reflecting on the loss of a young life.

“From what I understand, Ra’myl was a bright, joyful child who brought light to every room he entered. His death is a profound loss to everyone who knew and loved him,” he said. “Our focus now is on securing justice and helping the community begin to heal.”

The sheriff also highlighted the emotional toll such cases take on law enforcement personnel.

“Our deputies are often exposed to unspeakable trauma. Investigating the death of a child—especially under these circumstances—is emotionally devastating,” he said. “To witness such tragedy and then return home to one’s own family as though nothing happened is an incredibly difficult burden to carry.”

He praised the responding officers and detectives for their professionalism and commitment under such challenging circumstances.

“My deepest gratitude goes to our team. Their dedication to seeking justice for Ra’myl is unwavering, even in the face of unimaginable sorrow,” Del Toro said.
