Man breaks into his ex’s home, stabs her 30 times, then slits her throat because she wouldn’t die fast enough
A man from Ohio has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home and brutally stabbing her 30 times, including slitting her throat to “speed up the process” following their breakup.
27-year-old Chance Donohoe, received his life sentence on Thursday, with the possibility of parole after 31 years, for the murder of 29-year-old Shannon Hiott.
Last month, Donohoe pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated murder and gross abuse of a corpse, prosecutors said.
In an attempt to seek leniency, Donohoe’s defense lawyer argued that he was under the influence of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and a significant amount of alcohol at the time of the murder.
His mother, Ashley Radca, also provided a letter explaining her son’s troubled background, including being raised by a single mother and struggling with mental health issues from a young age.
“I will never fully understand how my son was capable of doing the horrific things he did the night he ended Shannon’s life,” Radca wrote. “It was so entirely out of character and not like anything he had ever done in the past. What he did was beyond terrible, and he must pay a consequence for his actions.”
During the sentencing, Shannon Hiott’s mother, Jamie Hiott, confronted Donohoe, expressing her grief and anger. “How scared she must have been. You are a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier,” she said. “You had all that time to change your mind, but you’re a monster,” she added.
The murder occurred on August 29 when Donohoe forced his way into Hiott’s residence on Berkeley Road in Columbus and attacked her. Hiott sustained 30 stab wounds during the assault. After the attack, Donohoe fled to his mother’s home in Powell. Then, he called 911, confessed to the murder and surrendered to authorities.
Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Dan Lenert highlighted the brutal nature of the crime during the sentencing. “I can only imagine what was going through Shannon’s mind as he busts in her door and starts stabbing her,” Lenert said.
“He told the police he slit her throat to speed up the process. This was not drugs, this is not ketamine, this is not methamphetamine, this is not cocaine, this is someone that’s angry. He’s pissed off about posts being made about him on social media. He’s upset about their breakup and he goes to her house that night and sees a vehicle from another man that he knows that he recognizes,” Lenert added.
Lana Hiott, Shannon Hiott’s sister revealed that Donohoe had stolen money and prescription medication from Shannon and that she had asked him to move out a week before the attack.
Days before her death, Shannon posted on Facebook, indicating that she was feeling better after ending the relationship: “I stopped trying to be the catalyst of change in my relationship, and the truth was revealed. I am so much happier than I was a couple weeks ago.”
