Husband fatally shot estranged wife’s boyfriend, then forced her to shoot victim’s body: ‘You better shoot him or I’m going to shoot your a** right now’

Michael Maurice Mack, a 48-year-old Texas man, is wanted for capital murder after a harrowing incident in which he broke into his estranged wife’s home, killed her boyfriend and forced her to participate in the disposal of the body.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, announced Mack’s fugitive status on Saturday.

Sheriff Gonzalez urged anyone with information regarding Mack’s whereabouts to contact their local law enforcement agency, the Harris County Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100, or Crime Stoppers of Houston at 713-222-TIPS (8477).

Mack and his wife married in 2019 but had been separated for the past 18 months. During this time, Mack began stalking his estranged wife. The victim, 53-year-old Kelvin Hinton, had recently started dating Mack’s wife, but he never informed his family about the severity of Mack’s behavior.

The situation escalated on Wednesday at around 3:30 a.m. when Mack broke into his wife’s home on Wells Station Court in Katy, Texas, by entering through a side window.

According to the wife’s statements to investigators, she was awakened by Mack beating her with a rifle. Hinton, who was also in the home, woke up and attempted to intervene but was fatally shot by Mack, who then continued to assault his wife.

The wife described Mack as wearing a tactical gear with two handguns attached, along with another firearm on his hip.

During the attack, he threatened her life and claimed he had been watching her and Hinton all day. At one point, he forced her to participate in the crime, handing her a handgun and ordering her to shoot Hinton.

“Grab it, b—-h,” he allegedly said. “You better shoot him or I’m going to shoot your ass right now.”

Under duress, with the rifle pointed at her head, Mack forced her to pull the trigger. Although she claimed that she did that with her eyes closed and was unsure if the bullet actually hit the body, according to authorities.

After the shooting, Mack ordered his wife to help him dispose of Hinton’s body, threatening to kill her if she refused. He wrapped the body in bedsheets and placed it in the trunk of his wife’s car.

The couple then drove to a gated lot in Vidor, Texas, approximately 120 miles east of Katy, where they left the body. Mack eventually released his wife, warning her that he would not kill her “today.”

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of the murder and found evidence of foul play at the home, leading them to track down Hinton’s body in Vidor, according to Gonzalez.

Authorities have deemed the wife’s account reliable and credible, and further evidence against Mack includes surveillance footage from a gas station in Vidor.

Hinton is survived by two daughters and was also a grandfather. His brother, Michael Lewis, expressed the deep pain the family is enduring, stating, “I don’t have no choice. I got to go forward. It’s going to hurt.”
