Fix Google Photos Not Syncing Easily

When Google Photos stops syncing, it can be frustrating, especially if you’re relying on it to back up precious memories or free up space on your device. These my tips will help you troubleshoot and resolve syncing issues with Google Photos, ensuring your photos and videos are safely backed up.

Check Your Internet Connection

The most common reason Google Photos fails to sync is due to an unstable or weak internet connection.

  • Verify Your Wi-Fi Connection:
    • Ensure your device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. You can check this by opening other apps or trying to browse the web.
    • If your Wi-Fi connection is weak or slow, try moving closer to your router or resetting the router.
  • Switch to Mobile Data:
    • If you’re on the go, and Wi-Fi isn’t available, make sure Google Photos is allowed to use mobile data.
    • On Android, go to Settings > Apps > Google Photos > Data usage and enable Mobile data.
    • More so, on iOS, go to Settings > Google Photos and ensure Mobile Data is toggled on.

Personal Tip: If your device is set to back up photos only on Wi-Fi to save data, consider temporarily enabling mobile data backup if you’re in a pinch and need to sync immediately.

Ensure Backup & Sync Is Enabled if Google Photos Still Not Syncing

Google Photos not syncing? Sometimes the sync issue is as simple as the Backup & sync feature being turned off.

  • How to Check on Android:
    1. Open the Google Photos app.
    2. Tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner.
    3. Select Photos settings and then Backup & sync.
    4. Also, ensure that Backup & sync is toggled on.
  • How to Check on iOS:
    1. Open the Google Photos app.
    2. Tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner.
    3. Go to Photos settings, then Backup & sync.
    4. As a result, make sure Backup & sync is turned on.

Personal Tip: If you’ve recently updated your device or the app, it’s worth revisiting this setting as updates can sometimes reset preferences.

Free Up Storage Space

Google Photos might stop syncing if your Google account is running out of storage space. Google offers 15GB of free storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, but this can quickly fill up.

  • Check Your Storage:
    • Visit the Google Drive website or open the Google One app to see how much storage you have left.
    • If you’re low on space, consider deleting large files or emails, or upgrading to a Google One plan for more storage.
  • Manage Photos and Videos:
    • In Google Photos, use the Free up space option to delete local copies of photos that have already been backed up.
    • Consider compressing your photos and videos to the Storage saver quality (previously High quality), which uses less storage but still offers good quality.

Personal Tip: Regularly review and delete blurry or duplicate photos to free up space and keep your photo library organized.

Update the Google Photos App

Running an outdated version of Google Photos can cause syncing issues due to compatibility problems or bugs that have been fixed in newer versions.

  • How to Update on Android:
    1. Open the Google Play Store.
    2. Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines) and select My apps & games.
    3. Also, look for Google Photos and tap Update if an update is available.
  • How to Update on iOS:
    1. Open the App Store.
    2. Tap on your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
    3. Also, scroll down to see available updates, find Google Photos, and tap Update if needed.

Personal Tip: Enable automatic updates for Google Photos to ensure you’re always running the latest version. Also, this can save you from future syncing headaches caused by outdated software.

Clear the Cache and App Data

Clearing the cache or app data can resolve various app-related issues, including syncing problems.

  • Clear Cache on Android:
    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Google Photos.
    2. Tap on Storage & cache.
    3. Select Clear cache.
  • Clear Cache and Data on iOS:
    • Unfortunately, iOS doesn’t offer a direct way to clear cache. The best alternative is to uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app.

Personal Tip: Start by clearing the cache before clearing data, as clearing data will log you out of the app and reset your preferences. More so, use this option only if other troubleshooting steps fail.

Restart Your Device if Google Photos Still Not Syncing

Sometimes, a simple restart is all it takes to fix minor glitches that might be affecting Google Photos.

  • How to Restart on Android:
    1. Press and hold the Power button until the power menu appears.
    2. Tap Restart.
  • How to Restart on iOS:
    1. Press and hold the Side button and either Volume button until the power off slider appears.
    2. Also, drag the slider to turn off your device, then press the Side button again to turn it back on.

Personal Tip: Make it a habit to restart your device weekly to keep it running smoothly and to resolve any temporary software issues that might affect app performance.

Check Google Photos Sync Status

Google Photos provides detailed information about the sync status, which can help identify where the issue lies.

  • View Sync Status on Android and iOS:
    1. Open Google Photos and tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner.
    2. You’ll see a message like Backup complete, Backup in progress, or Backup paused. If it’s paused, you can resume it from here.
    3. If the backup is stuck, tap on the notification to get more details and possible solutions.

Personal Tip: If your sync is stuck on a specific file, try uploading it manually by selecting it and choosing the Upload now option. Also, this can sometimes nudge the backup process forward.

Reinstall Google Photos

If all else fails, reinstalling the app can resolve stubborn syncing issues.

  • How to Reinstall on Android:
    1. Press and hold the Google Photos app icon and drag it to the Uninstall option.
    2. Open the Google Play Store, search for Google Photos, and reinstall it.
  • How to Reinstall on iOS:
    1. Press and hold the Google Photos app icon until the options menu appears.
    2. Tap Remove App, then Delete App.
    3. Also, go to the App Store, search for Google Photos, and reinstall it.

Personal Tip: Before uninstalling, ensure all your photos are backed up to avoid losing any data during the process. After reinstalling, give the app some time to sync your photos, especially if you have a large library.

Contact Google Support: If none of the above steps resolve your issue, it might be time to reach out to Google Support for more help.

  • How to Contact Support:
    1. Visit the Google Photos Help Center and search for articles related to your issue.
    2. If you can’t find a solution, scroll down to find contact options such as live chat, phone support, or email.

Personal Tip: When contacting support, be prepared with details such as your device model, operating system version, and a description of the troubleshooting steps you’ve already taken. Also, this will help the support team diagnose and resolve your issue more efficiently.
