Deputy texting before fatal crash faces charges, and now says, ‘she’s such an idiot’
Former Bingham County Sheriff’s Deputy Stephanie Grisham faces misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charges in Idaho for causing a fatal crash while allegedly texting and driving.
The incident, which occurred on February 1 on Wolverine Road west of the 600 North and 1100 East intersection near Goshen in Bingham County, resulted in the death of 80-year-old Robert Beal and injuries to his 76-year-old wife.
Grisham, driving a patrol vehicle, veered into the oncoming lane on Wolverine Road and collided head-on with the Beals’ Dodge Ram.
Grisham admitted her mistake to a responding fire captain, saying, “I screwed up. I was on my phone texting. I’m such an idiot.”
Dashcam footage and phone records corroborated that Grisham was texting at the time of the crash. The collision trapped all involved in their vehicles, necessitating emergency extraction. Robert Beal died at the scene, while his wife was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries. Grisham’s injuries were also not detailed.
Charged last week, Grisham could face up to a year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine. She has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled for arraignment on August 12 at the Bingham County Courthouse. Grisham, who resigned from her position following the incident, had nine years of patrol service.
Bingham Sheriff Jeff Gardner emphasized the tragedy of the event and the need for transparency while respecting due process. He explained that the Idaho State Police conducted the investigation, and the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the case to avoid conflicts of interest.
