Boy, 17, stabs mom to death in Florida one year after he fatally shot his dad

A 17-year-old boy in Florida has been charged with first-degree murder after stabbing his mother to death, just a year after he fatally shot his father in Oklahoma.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Collin Griffith called 911 on Sunday night, claiming that his mother, 39-year-old Catherine Griffith, had been accidentally stabbed in the neck during a fight. He alleged that she lunged at him with a knife and fell on it.

However, when deputies arrived at the scene, they found that the evidence did not align with Collin’s version of events.

Witnesses reported hearing an argument between the teen and his mother outside the home, with one neighbor stating they saw Collin grab his mother by the hair and drag her inside the house as she begged him to let her go.

Nancy K. Jones, who lives across the street, described seeing the confrontation. “Next thing I know, he grabs her and pulls her inside the house,” Jones said.

Collin’s grandmother, who owns the home but was not present at the time of the incident, told investigators that the teen had a history of being physically and verbally confrontational with his mother. She reportedly mentioned to a neighbor that Collin had “problems.”

An autopsy revealed that Catherine died from a deep knife wound to the neck, which the medical examiner determined was inconsistent with an accidental injury, further contradicting Collin’s claim.

Collin is currently charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and violation of a no-contact order.

The tragedy marks the second time Collin has been involved in a fatal incident within his family. In 2023, he fatally shot his father, Charles Robert Griffith, during an altercation at their Oklahoma home on Valentine’s Day.

At the time, Collin, then 15, claimed he acted in self-defense after being cornered by his father in a bedroom. He shot his father twice, once in the chest and once in the head. Although his mother posted $50,000 bail to secure his release, the charges were later dropped after authorities could not rule out self-defense.

After the case in Oklahoma, Collin was reunited with his mother through Florida’s Department of Children and Families. It was during this time that he first threatened to kill her, a threat that culminated in her death on Sunday.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd expressed his outrage over the case, labeling Collin a “violent predator” who has now killed both his parents. “We will hold him accountable in Polk County — we will do everything we can to keep him separated from civil society,” Judd said in a statement.
