Teacher Smirks in Booking Photo After Demonstrating to Students How to Staple Awake Cat

Emily Marie Benner, a high school agriculture teacher was taken into custody over the weekend after being allegedly caught on video offering students a disturbing hands-on lesson that involved stapling an awake and screaming cat’s incision.

The 25-year-old teacher, employed at Westwood High School in Palestine, Texas, was smiling in her mug shot and wearing a “Teach Ag” T-shirt at the time of her booking.

The incident, which took place last Friday, was captured on video. The footage shows the cat, fully awake and resisting, being held down by students in Benner’s agricultural animal science class as part of a lesson on stapling.

The cat was flipped over and subjected to the procedure, which has led to a charge of cruelty to non-livestock animals against Benner.

Benner brought the cat into the classroom and allegedly made an incision before demonstrating to the students how to staple it. She carried out the entire procedure without administering any form of anesthetic.

Following the incident, the cat was reportedly taken to a veterinarian, and Benner was arrested on Sunday. The arrest and the details surrounding the incident have drawn significant concern from the community and school officials.

Some parents were horrified upon learning the gruesome details from their terrified and traumatized children.

Wade Stanford, the superintendent of Westwood Independent School District (ISD), addressed the incident in a letter to parents and students, expressing deep regret and emphasizing that the district takes the matter extremely seriously.

“This procedure amounted to animal cruelty, and we want to make it absolutely clear that our district takes matters extremely seriously,” Stanford said in a press release.

He added that the behavior seen in the video “is not in line with the values and standards we uphold” and assured that “immediate and decisive action” would be taken in response to the incident.

As of Thursday, Benner still holds a valid certificate for teaching in Texas public schools, according to state records. However, the school district has not yet specified the exact actions it will take against her.

Benner was booked into Anderson County Jail on Sunday but was released the same day on a $7,500 bond. Her court date has not been scheduled.

Put her in an Afghan prison. They’ll give her a fun time. I’ll pay for the flight.
