Mom abandoned paralyzed daughter on floor for a week, wanted her to ‘get up on her own’: Police
Rose Chavis, 75, from Indiana, is facing felony charges for neglect after allegedly leaving her paralyzed 40-year-old daughter on the floor for an entire week.
The victim, who has cerebral palsy and paralysis on the left side, along with other physical and mental impairments, fell between her bed and the wall in early September.
Despite being aware of her daughter’s fall, Chavis refused to help, stating that she wanted her daughter to “get up on her own.”
The investigation began on September 13, when authorities were called to the home on Lancashire Court after reports of neglect. According to court documents, Chavis acknowledged that her daughter had been getting “sicker and sicker” but told her not to call an ambulance, claiming the daughter had called too many times in the past.
During the week her daughter was on the floor, Chavis provided her with food, drink, and medication but never sought medical help, which is against caregiving protocol.
The victim, unable to move, eventually used a coat hanger to reach her phone and call 911. When paramedics arrived, they found her in a severe state, suffering from extreme skin damage with multiple wounds from her knees to her mid-back. Maggots were discovered in some of the wounds, and the victim reported severe pain, rating it 7 out of 10.
Medical professionals indicated that the infection was serious enough to require her transfer to a rehabilitation facility. The daughter had been hospitalized for three days by the time the affidavit was filed.
