Boy, 10, Fatally Shot Louisiana Mayor And His Daughter Over Video Games
In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a 10-year-old boy fatally shot a former Louisiana mayor and his adult daughter, after a dispute over credit card charges for video games, according to cops.
The small town of Minden was left in shock when the bodies of 82-year-old Joe Cornelius Sr., a one-time mayor and respected community leader, and his 31-year-old daughter, Keisha Miles, were discovered early Sunday morning in Cornelius’ home.
Both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Authorities quickly arrested the boy, a relative of the victims and he faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder.
According to the town’s Police Chief Jared McIver, the young boy confessed to the killings without showing any signs of remorse.
The events unfolded around 6:30 a.m. Sunday when neighbors reported hearing a heated argument followed by eight gunshots. One neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted hearing Cornelius and the boy shouting at each other before the tragic violence erupted.
“He was arguing with him; I heard them hollering,” the neighbor recalled. “And then, suddenly, the boy just pulled out a gun. Joe, being a former sheriff, had guns in the house, and the boy knew where they were kept. It’s just so incredibly sad.”
The detailed nature of the argument or if the boy has autism has not been confirmed by the police.
Joe was more than just a former mayor; he was a pillar of the community.
Appointed as Minden’s mayor in 2013 following the previous mayor’s death, Joe had also served on the city council and in the sheriff’s department. He was deeply involved in community service, running youth programs, helping to establish local Black history observances, and working at a funeral home.
“Joe’s dedication to Minden was unwavering,” current Minden Mayor Nick Cox expressed in a statement. “He was not just a leader; he was a friend and a mentor to many, including myself. His loss is deeply felt.”
Keisha Miles, Cornelius’ daughter, leaves behind three children. Her eldest, a 17-year-old son, has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her funeral expenses.
