Special education teacher now on leave for public intoxication

A Loudon County public high school special education teacher was reportedly placed on paid administrative leave after being accused on Friday of being intoxicatied in public by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia.

Amy Richards, 60, a special education teacher in Loudoun County, who has spent eight of her 21 years of teaching at Potomac Falls High School, was taken into custody following a public disturbance due to intoxication.

Authorities said someone allegedly told the school resource officer last Friday that Richards appeared to be “under the influence.”

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office daily incident report stated that she was subsequently freed after county police escorted her to the county’s detention facility before releasing her on her own recognizance.

Potomac Falls High School principal Brandon Wolfe addressed letters to the school community explaining that no one was wounded in the event. “I’m writing to you with an update to the message I sent earlier today regarding an event involving a staff member that happened on our campus,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe added, “I am unable to provide further information at this time because it is an issue for law enforcement, but if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.”

According to a statement from Loudoun County Public Schools officials, Richards has subsequently been placed on paid administrative leave.
