Karl Urban Negotiates to Play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2 as Franchise Expands

Karl Urban is reportedly in the final stages of negotiating to play the iconic character of Johnny Cage in the sequel to the 2021 hit movie as The Mortal Kombat universe expands. The New Line production will bring back director Simon McQuoid, with Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight,” “The Umbrella Academy”) writing the script for the highly-anticipated follow-up. Audiences well-received the original film, which offered a more intense and violent take on the franchise than its 1990s predecessors.

Warner Bros. made the decision to release the film both in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously as a result of the pandemic, which proved to be a successful move for the studio. The film quickly became one of the most popular titles on the streaming service and the latest in a line of adaptations based on the global video game phenomenon created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

Actor Karl Urban is reportedly in talks to play Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat sequel, bringing new excitement to the franchise.

The post-credits scene of the first film teased the addition of Johnny Cage, and fans have been eagerly anticipating the character’s arrival ever since. Cage first appeared in the Mortal Kombat universe in the 1992 arcade game and has since become a staple of the series, known for his Hollywood charisma and impressive martial arts skills.

In the games, Cage is one of the primary heroes who defend Earthrealm from various threats, and he is celebrated for his signature moves and fatalities. The character’s role later passed down to his daughter, Cassie Cage, in the later installments of the series.

Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Broken Road Production’s Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh are producing the sequel, titled “Mortal Kombat 2.” Urban, who is currently starring in Amazon’s “The Boys,” is expected to bring his unique acting style to the role of Johnny Cage. Urban has also appeared in other blockbuster films, such as “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Star Trek,” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
